Interior Design- Color of the Year

Hi from Brooklyn!

As we move into this new year, I thought I'd bring you up to date on a few happenings in Design World. Within the design community much is made of 'The Color of the Year'. These colors are chosen with a lot of thought on how they will impact us in every 'design' field including fashion, home, electronics, automobiles; the list goes on and on. Pantone, the arbiter of color in the fashion world, has chosen the 2 colors pictured. The research (because design is always about research) behind this surprising choice, provides a commentary on current societal influences. This choice also shows a movement towards quiet and calming hues.

I've noticed within interior architecture color moving away from cold greys and stark whites towards warmer stone hues (as in Sherwin-Williams pick of Alabaster and Ben Moore's Simply White). These colors are an antidote to our fast-paced lifestyles and provide a balance of mind and spirit. We live such crazy busy lives that color becomes very important in helping us to rest and recuperate. Even within the commercial design and hospitality fields, there is a growing emphasis on providing an environment of quiet simplicity. This is done with a sophisticated mixture of sleekness, organic elements, and soft colors. Mix in the unexpected to intrigue the senses and you have a winning combo. Whether traveling, at work or at home, we perform best in a serene and comfortable environment with enough color and natural influences to keep our interest as well as to foster focus and lower distractions.

What colors allow you to create your personal inspiring and relaxing environment?

Enjoy your day. – Theresa
