Kitchen Design

Hello from Orlando!

I started the New Year on an airplane, but since I was heading south and out of the frigid NYC weather (-7 windchill when I left at 5am), no complaints here! The National Kitchen and Bath association hosts a yearly trade show in conjunction with the National Builders Show and it did not disappoint. Manufacturers from around the world showed their best, brightest and newest products.

When I work on a project with my clients, there is always an element of 'custom' work incorporated into the design concept. This makes sense as each of you is an individual and live your life in a particular way. You need your home/office/restaurant to function in a way that works uniquely for you.

The KBIS show enable me to note trends, discern levels of quality by comparing products side-by-side and to discuss custom options with each company. Frequently my designer brain is ahead of the manufacturers' production schedule, so now I have awesome new resources in my back pocket, bringing my clients the best of the best.  There has been a noticeable shift in where kitchen design is heading and it is so refreshing to see this change.  Here are a few things I am focused on in Kitchen Design-

1. Colored Appliances- This started years ago with the iconic AGA ranges and was tweaked by the Italian companies. Their array of ranges in bright sports car colors show no sign of abating. These Sexy Stoves, as I call them, are everywhere and look amazing as a focal point in kitchen design. The latest twist to color saturated appliances is a sophisticated matte finish, like the refrigerator in the top photo.

2. Wood Cabinets- As white cabinets are now ubiquitous, wood finishes are emerging as the 'new' cabinet color. Granted, white will never go away, but there is inherent beauty in wood grain as it lends a quietness to kitchen design that is very beautiful and updated.

3. Fancy Tile- Patterned tile is emerging as an important trend in kitchens, bathrooms and flooring.  There are several variations including tone-on-tone, large format, and 'cement' tile. What I love- it gives maximum visual punch for a comparatively small price.

Enjoy this month and stay warm!

xoxo Theresa
