A Little Construction: Barn Door & Book Shelves

Hi from Brooklyn!

I decided to do a little long overdue construction in my apartment. In order to accomodate a full wall of bookshelves, I needed to change out some doors and build the wall higher. The bookshelves span 11 feet long by 11 feet high. Roomy enough to house all of our collective, but super important, 'stuff'. While the bookcase design seems pretty straight forward, there was a lot of math involved to both support the weight of our books as well as to house the TV, Xbox and helmets (Star Wars!). And then we had to figure out how to run the cords from the outlet to where they were needed without actually seeing them. It turned out amazing and I was super happy with the charcoal lacquer I chose. Not too dark and not too trendy, but interesting and just right.

Enjoy your day!

xoxo Theresa

Beginning: We started with french doors and a large & open space above the wall.

In Process: The original wall was ever-so-slightly crooked, so we had to replumb and rehang sheetrock.

Final: Seen from the entrance, switching to a barn door gave more space for the book shelves on the inside wall & look much cooler from the outside. Custom-made & stained to match the floor.

Final: From inside the room, a smooth barn door with the book shelves on the right. At the top corner, you can see that the shelves perfectly match the new wall height.

Final: This shows the left half of the book case. Pretty awesome!
